Chapter Sixteen

Casey quickly realized, however, that the new day could be nothing like the previous. That morning, she left Ben to make breakfast and went to check on Geller and the campsite. Even though he’d insisted the night before that everything was fine and practically forced her out the office door, she’d seen the strain in his eyes and noticed his limp was more pronounced than usual. Today was bound to be even busier, and no matter what he said, she wasn’t going to leave him alone unless she was absolutely certain he could manage it.

He couldn’t. When she walked up, the line of people waiting in the office was out the door. Geller was trying to check out campers while new groups were coming in, and he’d gotten something confused in his registration system so that one trio was complaining they’d been charged thirty dollars more than they owed. Meanwhile, another couple was looking for fishing tackle, and a group that had been promised hiking maps was still waiting for Geller to get to them. When Casey pushed past everyone to help sort out the financial matter, a woman came in announcing that there was no more toilet paper in the camping toilets and that one of the boards on the steps leading up to a rental cabin had broken and splintered, although thankfully no one had been hurt.

“I’m really sorry,” she said to Ben when she called him from the office phone, having just sorted out the mix up with the paying group by going back through Geller’s muddled records and finding where he’d skipped a line in his handmade chart. “Things are crazy here, I’m going to have to stay and help out.”

“No, you’re not,” Geller growled, but Casey waved him off.

“Go ahead and start breakfast,” she said, trying to keep the blush out of her voice since everyone in the office could hear. “I’ll be down when I can.”

Thirty minutes later, Ben walked into the office with not two but three heaping plates. Casey couldn’t believe her eyes—or her taste buds. Delicate pillows of silken poached eggs were wrapped snugly in thin strips of Alaskan smoked salmon, each bright pink bundle perched on a slice of toasty brioche topped with avocado, red onion, and arugula. The whole masterpiece was drizzled with a lemony Hollandaise and sprinkled with fresh tarragon and chives.

“You have got to be kidding me,” she said, taking a plate and feasting with all of her senses. “There’s no way that came out of my kitchen.”

Ben apologized for not bringing enough for the whole office as Geller complimented him on being “a charming young man who knows how to handle himself in a kitchen.” Ben’s ears turned red, shy from all the attention, and Casey left him and Geller to make small talk about culinary school while she handed out the next round of maps and camping advice.

“You’re a lucky one if Miss Casey will let you stick around,” Geller said to Ben as he sopped up the buttery yolk with pieces of bread.
